Freeview HD: an overview
Freeview HD is an extension to the UK’s Freeview television service that allows broadcasters to deliver high definition content via the standard TV aerial.
A large proportion of the British population already receives Freeview programming via a dedicated digital box or unit built in to their TV. Most of the UK can also receive Freeview HD, but it does require equipment capable of receiving and decoding the signal. Older Freeview boxes and other equipment will have to be changed.
What does Freeview HD cost?
Presuming that you already have a TV capable of displaying high definition TV, and that your aerial is capable of receiving Freeview HD, then there is a one-off payment for a set-top box (currently from about £140).
After this, there is no ongoing subscription to pay (you still need a TV licence though). Freeview has no current plans to charge for any content, though you may be able to buy additional “top-up” packs.
What equipment do I need for Freeview HD?
You either need a digital box capable of receiving Freeview HD, or alternatively you may wish to buy a high definition TV with a Freeview HD tuner already built in.
You can buy basic models that simply allow you to watch TV, or you will soon be able to buy Freeview+ HD boxes that allow you to record programmes and pause live TV.
You may also need an aerial upgrade, either if you’ve never had Freeview before or if your current aerial is only capable of receiving standard TV signals.
