What is Freesat?

Freesat: an overview

Freesat is a subscription-free satellite service offering a range of programmes from major and specialist broadcasters, including high definition content. It launched in the UK in 2008.

It requires a satellite dish and a digital box or decoder built in to a high definition TV.

What does Freesat cost?

Presuming that you already have a TV capable of displaying high definition TV, you will need to buy a satellite dish (unless you already have a compatible one installed) plus a Freesat digital box.

You may also wish to pay for a professional to install everything, including putting up the satellite dish, though this is not mandatory.

Standard Freesat boxes cost from £50 and high definition ones from £60, though you can buy more feature-rich models that are more expensive.

An approved satellite dish costs around £80, with installation typically costing about £20, so a total HD-ready cost could be around £160.

After this, there is no ongoing subscription to pay (you still need a TV licence though). Freesat has no current plans to charge for any content.

What equipment do I need for Freesat HD?

You either need a digital box capable of receiving Freesat HD, or alternatively you may wish to buy a high definition TV with a Freesat HD tuner already built in. Note that standard definition Freesat boxes will not be able to receive high definition content.

What can I watch in high definition on Freesat?

There are currently two broadcasters providing a range of high definition programmes: BBC and ITV. Channel 4 is not currently available due to contract restrictions.

Content includes films, drama, documentary, soaps, comedy, nature programmes and sport.
